Elena Vanishing

A Memoir

Seventeen-year-old Elena is vanishing. Every day means renewed determination, so every day means fewer calories. This is the story of a girl whose armor against anxiety becomes artillery against herself as she battles on both sides of a lose-lose war in a struggle with anorexia.

Told entirely from Elena's perspective over a five-year period and co-written with her mother, award-winning author Clare B. Dunkle, Elena's memoir is a fascinating and intimate look at a deadly disease and a must read for anyone who knows someone suffering from an eating disorder.

Reviews

Every school library needs this, every bookshelf needs this, to educate people on what this disorder can mean, what it's like, what it can cause, what it can destroy. Because the only way change happens in this world is by awareness, as this book is the best possible first step in terms of anorexia awareness. The book is real, and true, and it hurts you as a reader. But it's vital. Elena Dunkle, having beaten the odds, is my total inspiration. I don't think Elena will ever read this, but I just wish I could thank her for the impact her story has had on me. Orli, Blame It On My Bookshelf

"Elena Vanishing is a remarkable book, a memoir of a battle with Anorexia that achieves something no work of fiction on the same subject ever could. From the very first page, this isnt a made up story of a girls struggle to eat properly, but a harrowing first person account of fighting the disease, getting a little better, relapsing, recovering and a constant cycle of being hounded about her diet by those who, on paper, are supposed to be her biggest champions family, friends and colleagues." The Bookbag

"The level of honesty and intimacy provided throughout makes for an intense read. There were moments when, like Joey from Friends, I had to put the book in the fridge (or my version: under the bed!) How quickly I took it out again is testament to how enthralling the text is."Gobblefunked
